Thoughts on Cheever’s Goodbye, My Brother

I saw their uncovered heads, black and gold in the dark water. I saw them come out and I saw that they were naked, unshy, beautiful, and full of grace, and I watched the naked women walk out of the sea.

No Waste of Time

They say that regret is usually a waste of time. And for all the mistakes I’ve made in life I’ve been lucky to avoid it almost entirely. To regret is to doubt the path you’ve taken, for better or for worse. I don’t lack regret because my life is perfect, but rather because I’m not. I’m just not perfect enough to see how I could have made it any better.

On Being a Bastard

Everyone cheers when they see a person on film rail against all odds to be themselves, to tell the truth and to change the world’s perception of them. When you do it in real life, then you’re a dog… unChristian… uncouth… when you do it in real life then you are a bastard.

How to Read a Magazine (for all its worth).

The strength of the magazine is its versatility… I choose my magazine by perusal or suggestion. I can ignore any page I want to. I don’t have to plug it in, wait for it to load, or even log in. I don’t feel bad for folding, tearing, or writing on it and when I’ve squeezed every bit of use out it I can toss it in the recycling bin without a seconds remorse.

Going No Where… On Purpose.

I sat out on the restaurant patio and listened to amazing writers quote their works. I drank my beer and smoked my smokes, as each one rose to share a morsel of the feast in their own minds. At that moment I could have been in Emerson’s living room or Lewis and Tolkien’s Eagle and Child Pub. But I wasn’t. I was at my bar. In my town.

A very good place to start…

When asked how to inherit eternal life Jesus turned the question back to the questioner. The man returned by quoting the Torah as any good Jew would have done. His paraphrase of the original has been repeated down through the ages for one simple reason. It captures the essence of what it means to know and follow God. When you strip away all of the debate and denominationalism in the public square today, when you stop arguing about whether Adam and Eve had navels, and whether Christ was an example for us to live by or a scapegoat for our sins these two commands remain. They are the simplest statement of what I’m supposed to do today… to do every day.

Resolve to have better days.

If you could design your perfect day what would it look like? Not a perfect day that can only happen once, like winning the lottery or getting a promotion… But the day you could live over and over again and be completely content? What actions would belong to a day like that? Eating a real breakfast? Walking the dog, listening to jazz, or reading in your favorite chair? Most of us will make resolutions or goals for this coming year that will aim at changing major parts of our life …
